Big data analytics applied to incineration furnaces

The Company

Teide Refractory Solutions S.L. was created by merging the companies comprising the Pyroterm group, national leader in the refractory sector for more than 60 years. It was born in Barcelona in 1954 with the aim of responding to market demands for refractory materials.

Currently, Teide Refractory Solutions operates as a single company with two specialized production centers: Lliçà de Vall (Barcelona) and Calanda (Teruel).Nowadays Teide Refractory Solutions S.L. markets a wide and varied product range and supplies worldwide refractory solutions to several sectors as ceramic industry, foundries, cement industry, incineration plants and many others.

With over 30 years of experience and more than 20 plants developed around the world, one of the fields of expertise of Teide Refractory Solutions S.L. is incineration, facilities for the incineration of liquid and solid waste, covering municipal, industrial, dangerous, toxic and hospital, among others. The company has developed different kinds of materials with specific characteristics together with engineering and numerical simulations based on what is required for each customer, obtaining optimal results for each specific case.


The Challenge

Incineration of urban solid waste is a very complex process with large variability in the inputs (waste composition, meteorological conditions, etc.) and strong requirements on the output (contaminant emissions, energy production, maintenance, costs, etc.).

Incineration plants are monitored by hundreds of sensors which measure variables such as temperature, vapor production, air flow or combustion species.These many sensors collecting data at high frequency produce a large amount of data (millions/billions per year), which require the use of special techniques to extract valuable information. Understanding the relationship between input and output variables is a must to operate the plant in optimal conditions.


The Solution

This project will be done in collaboration with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). The correlation between variables will be analyzed by neural network and deep learning techniques. The resulting model will be used to develop a predictive tool for the operation of incineration plants.


The Benefits

The predictive tool based on artificial intelligence will allow the company to offer additional services to the incineration furnaces operators. The operators will have valuable information about the behavior of the furnace that will support the decision making process, reducing costs and environmental impact.
